Minolta Autopak-8 D12

The last of the Autopak series (I believe...). Quite heavy camera. The auto exposure on my D12 doesn't work. Apparently it's a common fault of this model. But I do love the coating of this lens.

Lens

Minolta Zoom Rokkor-Macro 6.5-78mm f/1.8 lens with the purple/greenish coating I love to look at.

The angle of the focus barrel rotation from infinity to MOD is approximately 80°. I wish it had more angle.

By turning the macro switch, a diopter pops in between the elements. The list below shows the approximate measurements of the focus distance in macro mode at given focal lengths;

6.5mm: from the tip of the lens

10mm: 0.20m

15mm: 0.30m

20mm: 0.43m

30mm: 0.92m

*The distance from the tip of the lens to the focal plane is about 0.155m.

Viewfinder

Minolta put split-image rangefinder instead of microprism, which was used on D10. To me, it is a huge improvement because I like to set focus by an eye.

The shutter angle indicater is ok, but it is hard to set the angle besides the marked points, especially between 80-160° because the 160° marking is invisible.

Frame Rates

To run the camera at either 32 or 54fps, you need the Hi-Speed Power Pack, which takes additional 7 AA batteries.

D12 equipped with the Hi-Speed Power Pack. As you can see, D12 gets really big with accessories for a Super 8 camera.

Variable Shutter

The shutter is variable from 0-160°.

Exposure Control

The expoure can be set either manually or automatically. It accepts wide range of film speeds (ASA 16-640) and offers exposure compensation (2 stops over/under in 1/2 stop increments).

What you see below the exposure control dial in the left photo is the built-in filter switch.
