Sekonic L-418

Sekonic's needle-free incident meter with silicon cell. It uses readily available AA battery. Great!!

The one complaint I have about the meter is that it lacks the feature that enables calibration. So when the reading starts to go off or you want to match it with other meters, there would be nothing you can do but to take it to a store for calibration.

The Silicon Cell

The blue filter over the cell to match the sensitivity of film.

The Operation

The operation is easy.

1) Select either insident or reflected by turning the I/R selector ring.

2) Set the ASA with the film sensitivity selector knob.

3) Place the meter and press the button on the right.

4) The shutter speed scale disc turns and stops automatically.

5) What is aligned with your shutter speed is your f/stop.

I don't know if this direct reading style is better than the needle one, but I do love the mechanical sound it makes when the disc turns.

It could be just me but the dial helps me make sense of things when I have to do some adjustments.

When you turn the black knob on the right side of the meter (seen in the photo above) 45° clockwise, you can lock the button either to take continuous reading or to avoid accidental reading.

The Battery

It takes a readily available AA battery.

The Case

The original case holds the meter and the two discs in the pocket on the back.
